ABOUT THIS PROJECT

SUMMER 2022

This project is another extension of the Digifest concept, which I also explored in my previous work. The final result is a 6" x 9" postcard invitation using Variable Data Print to promote the Digifest event at University of Houston Sugar Land. Digifest is a career fair for senior Digital Media students to showcase their best work. This project was created in collaboration with Jana Rowe and Stephanie Le in July of 2022. The programs we used were XMPie uCreate to make Variable Data Print along with print extensions in Adobe InDesign to design a postcard. The postcard would then be distributed through USPS Direct Mail, so utilizing proper mailing code measurements was also important to consider.


The concept was derived from Digital Media's unique class structure and delivery, as well as its program catalogue. We wanted to emphasize this in the final project. To some individuals, it may be confusing as to what Digital Media actually encompasses. Outside perspectives may expect it to have one central focus, only to find out that the program embodies multiple areas of fixation that are all interconnected. Digital media's primary areas of focus include graphic design, marketing, technology, and production; while it is important to consider these holistically, employers may only be interested in one sect or specialization of Digital Media for hiring candidates. This may lead to confusion regarding how students will gain a cohesive education with the course objectives allocated over three or more different areas of focus.


Through the use of concentric circles as graphical elements, I wanted to show the progression of classes. I also wanted to demonstrate how one area is not overemphasized in particular over the others, and each area will have sufficient content to accompany it. This project draws on the importance of taking courses in the specific order given by the program. The design shows exactly what is covered to indicate how students advance and develop as the scope of the program's requirements becomes narrower.
