INVENTION POSTER

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

FALL 2020

I decided to create a poster based around the invention of the X-ray due to the fact that I liked the imagery for this topic and felt it could give me an opportunity to make a unique concept/piece. I tried to find compelling imagery that would be easily recognizable and easy to associate with X-rays while still making the result visually appealing. Although I had a lot of stylization concepts, I still wanted to keep things relatively simple and convey what information I had with only a limited number of the stylizations in order to prevent the composition from appearing cluttered. Most of my process was dedicated to re-learning Adobe Illustrator (R.I.P. Fireworks), involving what some might consider to be excessive use of the free drawing pencil tool. The images to be stylized were pretty simple and straightforward, though I tried to use this to my advantage on the final by overlaying the stylizations and toggling the opacity in order to make them more interesting where I could, particularly with the line and gesture drawings.

Following the creation of the individual stylizations, I needed to implement them into a cohesive design and apply a harmonious color palette to the entire composition. This final result was achieved through a fairly long process of trial and error. Most of the process included experimenting with the stylizations and how I could make them interact with each other. I ended up using stylizations from all three images and a total of five different stylizations with some repeated throughout the image. I found applying color to be pretty fun and easy, especially after the initial frustration with Illustrator, and I settled on a orange-gold/teal for the final palette. Eventually, the end result came down to a lot of rearranging to make sure the different elements were both working well together and in optimal position to make the other ones stand out. I also like to think that the more someone looks at the poster, the more background elements such as the partially-obscured radiation symbol will become clearer. Overall, I was satisfied with the result and my goal of creating a visually interesting application of my stylizations.
